Magister Graves

This character was created specifically for an ongoing RP with Felicity Grey, played by ladywrath231992. I may consider other RP's with him but none of those will supplant his current one with Felicity. Any other such RP would be considered an alternate universe.

Prince Dorian Graves, Magister of Darkon, is a powerful mage from a nation ruled by a despotic wizard-king, Lukas Graves. Betrothed and married to Princess Felicity Grey of Averness, he finds himself walking a difficult line between duty to two nations and his own conscience.

Dorian is older than he appears, a side effect of using magic for a long period of time. He's tall, taller than Felicity by more than half a foot, and well-trimmed as a man in the prime of his life should be. His dark hair is let to grow shoulder-length and a small, iron crown encircles his head at formal functions. Silver often lines his darker clothing, two rings decorating his fingers; one, a sigil for his personal seal and the other a gift from his betrothed-now-wife, Felicity.

He often dresses in the Darkonian fashion, blacks and grays, favoring comfortable robes but sporting more formal attire when called for. A decorative chest plate with the sigil of Darkon on it, silken robes with metallic gray colors, an ornate longsword with a ruby in the hilt. A cloak as well, enchanted with minor magic to leave Dorian comfortable when wearing it, no matter what the external temperature might be. It creates a subtle but noticeable effect when one is never bothered by the world around them, not shedding even a drop of sweat in the worst of a summer heat. His robes are enchanted with other defensive spells as well, though when they activate, they can only repel so many magical assaults before the magic in them needs to recharge. At a minimum, they offer as much protection as a corresponding suit of armor would.

Dorian is the sixth-born child though only the second male. His eldest brother is the crown prince of Darkon, followed by four sisters, then him. He was shipped to the Academy at Il Aluk when he was eight years old and lived there most his life until his move to Averness. Dorian went from an apprentice, to a student, to a master, to a professor over the following decades there.

Dorian is a talented archmage, able to utilize and manipulate a wide-range of magic. He's strongest with those spells which target life forces or the natural flows of energy but doesn't have a deficit in any one specific aspect of the Art. He's a master-mage, having spent more than some men's lifetimes in study of the arcane.

Displayed powers thus far have included...

• Feats of telekinesis or levitation, such as when he made his and Felicity's outfits seem to float on an invisible sea during their engagement dance, or calling objects to himself from afar. This was helpful as he's not a particularly skilled dancer otherwise. He can use telekinetic thrusts offensively as well, striking like an unseen hammer or shoving/pulling foes.
• Manipulation of light and sound waves for dramatic effect.
• Conjuring portals which allow him, and others, to cross from one point to another instantaneously regardless of the physical distance.
• Imbued the skeletons of would-be-assassins with a desire to "get out" of their hosts bodies... with graphically violent results.
• Various wards, from sealing doors against being opened to blocking sound from traveling outside of an area.
• General arcane sensitivity to when other magic is being used in his area, to include what kind and sensing the aura or 'vibe' of the spellcaster creating it. Dorian can recognize familiar magic the way people can recognize familiar faces, allowing him to recognize the resonance of others spells and recognize the creator, if known to him.
• Alchemical talents, such as the ability to create a magical pet for Felicity. Such things take time and can't be done quickly. Dorian can create potions, spell scrolls, and wands with the proper time and resources. He can also enchant items with magical effects.
• Minor incantations, such as shrinking clothing to fit a smaller person better.

When Dorian channels or weaves, as he calls it, it generates a sensation in witnesses of sleepwalking. As if the stuff of dreams was being spun into reality, superimposed on the world for a moment as his will takes effect. It has no debilitating effect but it's mildly distracting, to those not used to the "flavor" of his spells, and it's hard to forget. When Dorian works his magic, it can feel like life really is a dream, or not real, before proper reality reasserts itself.

Channeling too much magic in a short amount of time has a tiring effect on the mage. He's experienced enough that minor effects cause him little discomfort but one can only portal across a continent so many times before one needs to recharge. It's possible for Dorian to over-channel as well; this can be fatal if pushed too far. Felicity had to save his life at least once by leeching magic out of him as he lost his ability to control the font of it. In this regard, magic is a raging river and Dorian is a dam who can open the floodgates. He can control the flow to a greater degree than a novice mage, based on his experience, but even he can be swept away by too strong a current. Dorian sometimes makes use of objects such as wands, staves, or other tools when casting magic as these things allow him to focus the energies better.

There is no hard and fast rule to what Dorian can and can't do. Whatever feels thematic in the moment, without killing the drama or straining credibility, is what he can do. In a more structured setting, like D&D, this would change to fit the model of the game line.
